About Stockholm

Stockholm is well known as the capital of Sweden, being the country’s most populated city. National institutions as the government, the parliament and the monarch are based here. Ever since its foundation in 1250 the city of Stockholm has been an important cultural and political center. Norse sagas make reference to the city. The Old Town or Gamla Stan is located on a central island. Being situated on 14 islands, the place is also known as the “Venice of the North”.
In the 20th century Stockholm has become ethnically diverse and continued to grow with immigrant neighborhoods as Tensta or Rinkeby. About 30 per cent of the city surface is covered by water and other 30 per cent is represented by green areas. Services absorb most of the working population. High technology companies as Ericsson or IBM are located here. Finances are equally well represented in the area.
The Old Town still preserves the medieval style relevant in buildings as the German Church or the Oxenstierna Palace. The House of Nobility and the Tessin Palace are equally notable. The baroque Stockholm Palace was built on the site of a 13th century medieval castle and the Storkyrkan Cathedral dates back to the same century.
Stockholm is famous for being a green city. In 2010 it won the European Green Capital Award. The public transport system is extremely effective in this respect and very expensive. Bike rental adds successfully to the traditional transport options for this city. Do not hesitate to find more on Hotels in Stockholm City Centre.
