About Stockholm

Stockholm is well known as the capital of Sweden, being the country’s most populated city. National institutions as the government, the parliament and the monarch are based here. Ever since its foundation in 1250 the city of Stockholm has been an important cultural and political center. Norse sagas make reference to the city. The Old Town or Gamla Stan is located on a central island. Being situated on 14 islands, the place is also known as the “Venice of the North”.

The baroque Stockholm Palace was built on the site of a 13th century medieval castle and the Storkyrkan Cathedral dates back to the same century.
Stockholm is famous for being a green city. In 2010 it won the European Green Capital Award. The public transport system is extremely effective in this respect and very expensive.
